The tug FLYING PHANTOM |
Farewell to tug crew
Shipping Times asks its readers to remember the men of FLYING
PHANTOM and their families...
Shipping Times apologises for the lack of news in recent weeks, but
readers may appreciated that our last news item of 2007 was too close
to home, with us being a Clyde-based publication, and we did not wish
to carry further news until the men had been recovered from the tug
FLYING PHANTOM and laid to rest.
The editor was conscious that if we provided news items without
reference to the FLYING PHANTOM it would have seemed odd, but did not
want to continue with any news rather than raise eyebrows over
respectful omissions.
Our sympathies go to the families and friends of the three crewmen so
cruelly lost near Clydebank, and we will carry no more articles on the
tragedy until the MAIB has concluded its investigation.
The editor would have hoped to enter 2008 with a message for the year
ahead, and instead, wishes to make an appeal to all readers to make a
donation to the fund that the tug's owners have set up to assist the
families who lost their loved ones, who were Stephen Humphreys, Bob
Cameron and Eric Blackley
Mr Cameron's funeral is due to be held today, whilst respects were
paid to Mr Blackley on Tuesday and on Monday hundreds attended the
service for skipper Stephen Humphreys
The details of the official fund are as follows:
Bank: Danske Bank
Name of account: Svitzer Crew Services Ltd
Sort code: 30-12-81
Account code: 93863729
Shipping Times would also like to take the opportunity of
congratulating the Clyde tug crews who have behaved with the utmost
professionalism and integrity following the tragedy and who have had
to pass by the spot where PHANTOM lies as they perform their duties.
It is at times like these we should remember that life at sea, even in
our more benign shipping channels, can be hazardous and dangerous and
that we owe a debt of gratitude always to those who dedicate their
lives to professional seamanship.
The crew of FLYING PHANTOM will never be forgotten.
