Wood spill ship drops anchor
SINEGORSK now 4.5nm SE of Isle of Wight...
The MCA yesterday announced that the SINEGORSK, the Russian vessel that lost 1500 metric tonnes of sawn timber from its deck had dropped anchor 4.5 nautical miles east, south east of Sandown, Isle of Wight.
The Coastguard Tug, the ANGLIAN EARL is at the scene of the loss to provide a presence at that location to warn other approaching ships and to monitor the rate of drift.
Lastest calculations predict that the timber may come ashore late on Wednesday in the Dungeness area or on Thursday morning in the Dymchurch area, dependent on prevailing weather conditions.
At round 8.15 yesterday morning Dover Coastguard were alerted to the loss of 1500 metric tonnes of sawn timber which has been lost from the deck of the 1991 built, 137 metre, single screw, single deck, Russian vessel SINEGORSK, 14 nautical miles south of Newhaven.
The vessel was heading to Alexandria in Egypt from Oskarshamn in Sweeden.
The vessel with 25 people on board initially developed a 15 degree list at the time of the incident. The vessel was within the traffic separation scheme at the time of the incident.
The Receiver of Wreck has also been kept informed of the sawn timber, and its likely impact on the shoreline.
