Calmac in Hebridean Sunday sailings discussions
Ferry company announces talks with interested parties on controversial seven day operations

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne announced recently that it has, in response to a number of communications from individuals in Lewis, Harris and beyond, discussed its position in relation to seven-day sailings to and from Lewis and Harris.

The current situation, where the company has received a number of requests for seven-day sailings, and responses asking for the maintenance of the status quo, was detailed at a meeting of the CalMac Board held at  Gourock on Wednesday, September 26.

The Company has confirmed that it will now engage in discussions with interested parties including Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to discuss the many and complex issues involved, including costs, potential demand and working arrangements. The issues will be detailed and documented in a report which will go the next meeting of the CalMac Board which is due to be held in Fort William on Wednesday, 28 November.

CalMac say they will continue to take due notice of the views expressed, representing a wide range of opinions. The tender specification for the west coast lifeline services noted the sensitivities about Sunday sailings to and from certain communities. If considered appropriate, CalMac will refer the matter to the Scottish Government, as it would need to approve any timetable changes brought forward in relation to seven-day sailings.

The issue of Sunday sailings in the Outer Hebrides is a contentious one, with religious leaders and many islanders fearful that breaking with tradition would destroy the islands' character and would offend religious sensibilities. However opinions are by no means universal on the subject, with other islanders pointing out that a lack of Sunday sailings deters visitors and stifles trade and freedom of movement.

Calmac's announcement is a contradiction of an earlier statement in July of this year when the company stated that the issue of Sunday sailings was not on the agenda and no approaches had been made to the company.
