Irish police to investigate after death of Polish seaman
DUBLIN VIKING's Third Officer dies a week after incident

Irish police are to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 31 year old Polish seafarer after an incident involving the DUBLIN VIKING

The crewman, Mr Zawadowicz, was the ship's Third Officer. He and another crewman were injured in an incident understood to have been connected with a mooring rope last week at the Port of Dublin

Mr Zawadowicz's leg was ripped apart in the incident whilst the other seafarer dislocated a shoulder.

Reports suggest that when he was taken to hospital he never regained consciousness, however the details of the case are not particularly clear.

The officer's father has came over from Poland to demand answers and said that what had been told to him so far was not satisfactory.

The vessel is operated by Norfolk Line and resumed sailing after the incident which occurred at 11:30pm on Tuesday of last week. The ITFs Ken Fleming told the Irish Times that it was an outrage the vessel was allowed to leave port before all aspects of the incident last week had been properly investigated.

He said that due to the critical condition of Mr Zawadowicz it was not possible to speak to him to ascertain what had happened, nor was information forthcoming from the ferry company.
