EUKOR celebrates ground-breaking
ceremony for new RoRo terminal
Second purpose built car terminal in Korea
On May 23 EUKOR Car Carriers hosted a grand ceremony to celebrate the
groundbreaking of the second purpose-build car/RoRo terminal in
Pyeongtaek. Terminal 12 will together with terminal 11, which already
is under construction, be developed into a hub port for both import
and export cars not only for Korea, but also for the wider Northeast
Asia region. EUKOR and its co-investor Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics
are building two new terminals in the port of Pyeongtaek from
reclaimed land – being one of the largest foreign invested
infrastructure projects in Korea.
More than 200 distinguished guests participated in this milestone
event for Korea. The newly appointed Minister of MOMAF Mr. Moo-Hyun
Kang and the Governor of Gyeongki Province Mr. Moon-Soo Kim both
participated in the ceremony together with many other important VIPs
from MOMAF, Pyeongtaek and the Korean shipping community. Also the
Norwegian and Swedish ambassadors and the deputy Chief of the German
embassy participated making this a truly international event.
CEO & President Carl-Johan Hagman in his speech said “our investment
here in Pyeongtaek is a testament to our continued commitment to
developing the transportation industry out of Korea, which is
essential for the Korean car makers to remain competitive”. Further,
Mr. Hagman thanked MOMAF and the city of Pyeongtaek for its continued
support in developing the terminals, and enabling EUKOR to create a
true logistics hub for automobiles in Northeast Asia.
The terminal (no. 12) will be located next to terminal no. 11 and the
combined storage capacity will be around 10,000 units and a yearly
handling capacity in excess of 600,000 units. Terminal 11 will already
be operational by end of 2008, while terminal 12 will follow in late
2009. Together with the adjacent Kia Motors terminals (number 9 and
10) the future Pyeongtaek car/RoRo terminal will be one of the very
biggest dedicated car/RoRo terminals in the world.
