Felixstowe celebrates 10th
sailing regatta
Numbers expected to top all previous years
The Port of Felixstowe is celebrating reaching its 10th Anniversary
of sponsoring the Port of Felixstowe International Regatta. This
year’s event, to be held over the weekend of 26 – 28 May, is expected
to be the most popular and competitive Regatta yet.
Jointly organised by Haven Ports Yacht Club, Walton and Frinton Yacht
Club, and Royal Harwich Yacht Club, and held at Suffolk Yacht
Harbour, Levington, the Regatta has become one of the East Coast’s
premier sailing events.
Competitors are expected from the continent as well as throughout the
UK, and numbers are expected to top all previous years. The standard
of competition has risen significantly since the Regatta was first
conceived.
Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer for Hutchison Ports (UK)
Limited, owners of the Port of Felixstowe commented:
“The event has grown in stature over the years to become one of the
East Coast’s premier sailing events. Leisure traffic co-exist with
the commercial traffic in Harwich Harbour, and we are proud of the
close links the Port of Felixstowe has developed with this
prestigious competition”.
Regatta Organising Committee Chairman, Nigel Mower, added:
“The three clubs involved in the organisation of the Regatta are
extremely proud of its success. With the Port of Felixstowe’s support
it has become a leading fixture in the annual sailing calendar. A
great deal of hard work goes into the event each year, and the fact
that competitors seem to return year after year is testament to the
excellent racing that the Regatta provides”.
There is still plenty of time for additional entries, and anyone
interested in taking part should contact the Organising Committee
Chairman, or go to the Regatta website at www.pofr.org.
In addition to the racing, there is also an extensive social
programme attached to the Regatta, with food, drink, and live
entertainment in the evenings. The official Regatta prizegiving takes
place on the Monday afternoon, including the presentation of the
‘Hutchison Ports Cup’ for the most meritorious performance.
The racing will take place in Dovercourt Bay, over the weekend of
26th – 28th May, and will feature five races. Prizes are awarded on
the basis of each competitor’s best four races.
