Ships that have crossed the
bar...
A roundup of recent demolition sales...
Five ships to report that have recently been sold to the breakers.
First off is the 1979-built bulk carrier HISTRIA SUN. She was
constructed by Santierul Naval Constanta S.A, Romania and was operated
by Histria Shipmanagement. Reportedly sold to Bangladesh breakers.
Prior to her last name she was called BREAZA
Indian breakers have taken the CLEOPATRA 1, a 12,200 grt passenger/roro
vessel built in 1971 at Kanasashi Co.Ltd., Shimizu, Japan. She was
first named, rather boringly, CENTRAL No 3 for the Central Ferry Co of
Kobe, Japan. She was sold not long after in 1973 to sold to Cie
Nationale Algerienne de Navigation Maritime, Algeria and became the EL
DJAZAIR. Rebuilt in 1974 and transferred to two further Algerian
companies before being sold to Cleopatra Nav of Egypt in 2004.
Reportedly she had engine troubles last year which probably hastened
her demise.
Next off is the ATLANTIC FOREST, a USA-owned barge carrier. She was
built in 1984 at the Kherson Shipyard, Ukraine. Latterly owned by
Waterman Steamship Company, she has gone to Alang.
To Pakistan has gone the 16,166 grt RILA, another bulk carrier. She
was built in 1977 and was owned by Navigation Maritime Bulgare
Last but not least, another American-flagged vessel says goodbye, but
this time she was built in the USA at the National Steel & Shipuilding
Co in 1978. Powered by steam turbines and of 83,649 grt the elderly
crude oil tanker steams off into the history books to the breakers at
Bangladesh.
