Port of Silloth smashes cargo
record
No, not another music related story! ABP report largest ever
consignment of cargo
Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Silloth handled its
largest-ever consignment of cargo recently, following four years of
steady growth in the port’s tonnage levels.
In 2006, volumes through the port reached their highest level since
the 1990s. In addition, the port and its customer base continue to
satisfy the agricultural and manufacturing requirements of the
Cumbrian economy.
The cargo record was broken when 3,901 tonnes of fertiliser were
discharged from m.v. Anmi for Carrs Fertilisers, breaking the previous
record of 3,420 that was set in April last year. The port’s licensed
stevedoring company, DA Harrison, discharged the cargo for Carrs in
one working day.
Stan Denby, Managing Director, Carrs Fertilisers, said: “We are very
pleased to have been the company that delivered Silloth’s largest-ever
cargo, especially as discharge of the Anmi was achieved with such
efficiency. We hope to break this record again in the future.”
Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Port Manager, North-West Ports, added: “Breaking
Silloth’s cargo record once again, and by a significant margin, is a
fantastic achievement. Although Silloth is one of our short-sea or
“medium-sized” ports, this new record demonstrates that it is more
than capable of handling larger tonnages in a cost-effective and
productive manner. The port plays an integral role in the Cumbrian and
regional economy and is a catalyst for local trade and commerce. Its
growth over the last four years has been especially encouraging.”
