Shipbuilders celebrate successful series of bulk carriers
116 units of same series built or on order

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. announced today that orders for its series of 56,000 dwt bulk carriers, its main sales product, had exceeded 100 units. The company said this reflected a booming shipping market and that the number was still increasing with the total order number as of today standing at 116 units.

MES has long been designing and building the Handy-Max type bulk carrier as one of its main products. In 1993 MES started its “series ship construction” starting with the development and sales of the 46,000 dwt series bulk carrier.

MES say it made its utmost efforts to meet the requirements of shipowners and operators while investigating the harbour conditions and their relevant ship design requirement in the development of the series. Such 46,000 dwt bulk carrier series, said the company, were highly appreciated in the market as “Mitsui's 46” and greatly contributed to establishing the foundation of the Handy Max bulk carrier brand of MES.

In 1998, MES developed the 50,000 dwt type bulk carrier for more cargo loading and further in 2001, in order to comply with the requirement of clients based upon the actual operation results of 46,000 dwt type and 50,000 dwt type series, MES developed its “Easy Handling and Good Running” 56,000 dwt series.

The company said the excellent sales record of the 56,000 dwt series was attributed to the following features:

Cargo hold dimensions are enlarged to have bigger capacity (over 70,000 m3) than other conventional 56 type handy max bulk carriers to meet the customers demand.
Cargo hatch over openings are also enlarged for better cargo handling performance to meet special operational conditions of bulk carrier; i.e various kinds of cargo such as coal, iron ore, grain and steel and other raw material and/or semi-products and various navigational routes with various cargo and harbor conditions. Cargo handling cranes of bigger capacity are installed to enable cargo handling work in the ports.
Because of continuous series construction and leading time for construction as well as construction period is shortened enabling MES to meet the requirement for short time delivery by the clients in a flexible manner.
The ship is installed with highly reliable Mitsui-MAN B&W Diesel Engine.

Out of 116 units ordered, 55 units are already delivered (as of March 30) enjoying favourable reputation by the users said MES.
