Hanjin Heavy confirms order for five container ships
As previously reported, Hanjin to build ships for Danaos

Hanjin Heavy Industries publicly announced recently that Greek shipping company Danaos has ordered five Hanjin 6,500TEU container vessels at a price of USD 495,000,000.

These 6,500TEU high-tech, efficient container vessels are 300m in length, 40m in width, 24.6m in depth and can reach a speed of 25.6kt. In 2006, this container vessel, the company said, was selected as the most outstanding vessel by the industry's seaborne transportation and shipbuilding magazines. These vessels will be designed and built by Hanjin and delivered to ship owner successively from November 2009 to July 2010.

Danaos established in 1972, was  praised by Hanjin as "one of the Greek best container vessel operators" and said it has been rapidly growing in the world's seaborne transportation market in recent years.

With this first contract between Danaos Corp. and Hanjin, Hanjin said it can establish a bridgehead to stabilize its business in Greece and expects more progressive sales activities and growth in the market.

According to Hanjin they now have a stable order book to build about 60 vessels for a total price of USD 4.8 billion, for the next three years until 2010, and said they can prospectively focus on selling high-tech, high value-added vessels, such as the LNG vessels.

Hanjin's release indicated the vessels would be similar to MAERSK KOWLOON, (pictured) the Great Ship of 2006
