The crew of the Miami
Beach Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur located the 35 year-old man waving his
hands at the crew about 30 miles east of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., at 8:45
a.m.
Michael Mankamyer, residence unknown, was pulled aboard the 110-foot
cutter Chandeleur after spending eight hours in the water and then hoisted
into an HH-65 helicopter from Coast Guard Station Miami. Mankamyer has
been transferred to Jackson Mermorial Hospital apparently in good
condition but suffering from mild hypothermia.
The Coast Guard recieved the call from the captain's staff of the cruise
ship CARNIVAL GLORY about 12:45 a.m. reporting Mankamyer had jumped from
the balcony in his room. Multiple cutters and aircraft were launched to
assist in the search efforts along with the cruise ship DISNEY MAGIC.
"The crew of the Chandeleur demonstrated superb mission execution during
the search executing the recently transitioned SAR Ops program utlized by
the search and rescue coordinators at Coast Guard Sector Miami," said
Capt. James O'Connor, chief of search and rescue for Coast Guard District
Seven. "Mankamyer was extremely fortunate to have survived the fall from
the ship and the ability to remain alive in the water without any survival
gear."
