ROKIA DELMAS to be dismantled and removed

The container ship ROKIA DELMAS is to be dismantled and removed at last after having ran aground and remained fast since October last year.

She ran aground on rocks off the Ile de Re after suffering engine failure in the early hours of 24th October 2006.

Since then the hapless vessel has remained there, weathering the Atlantic storms and increasingly being in danger of breaking up on the spot.

In November she was declared a total loss by insurers, meaning the 21 year old ship was never going to be towed off and repaired

Now she will be lightened by removal of as much of her superstructure as possible and her hull will then be removed from the area with as much regard to ecological concerns as possible.

Three companies have been chosen to co-ordinate their efforts in this endeavour: Smit, Scaldis and Les Abeilles International.
