Ships Join UK Ship RegisterThe MCA has announced on its new UK Ship Register website that two new companies - Stolt-Neilsen and CMA CGM (UK) - joined the UK Ship Register at the beginning of the year, initially registering five and three ships respectively. They say that indications are that others will join the UK Flag in due course. In total, 20 ships have joined the UK Register in the previous two months (December 2006 and January 2007) Six of them were new builds whilst the
remainder transferred from other Flag States. The MCA said that the new
registrations represent a wide range of ship types joining the Register,
including seven containerships, eight chemical tankers and five general
cargo carriers. The UK Ship Register now boasts a total of 1,456 ships, totalling 12,755,568 gt. In the past five years, the commercial shipping fleet owned and managed in the UK has more than doubled in carrying capacity – and the UK registered fleet has more than quadrupled. |
