Shipbuilding briefs:

STX shipbuilding, the sixth largest shipbuilder in the world. has announced it has won an order to build its first Liquified Natural Gas tanker. The order was palced by Spain's Naviera Elcano SA and is worth $225 million. An option to buy three more tankers may increase contract value to $1 billion.

Malaysian shipbuilders Penang Shipbuilding and Construction have secured a $42 million order to, supply three chemical tankers to Gagasan Carriers of Putrajaya with delivery slated for October 2008, January and March 2009.

Another Malaysian company, Boustead Naval Dockyard, has entered an agreement with Turkish-based Yonca-Onuk Shipyard to set up a joint company to build and market pleasure craft, commercial and naval vessels in Malaysia.

Meanwhile figures released show that Japan constructed a record amount of tonnage in 2006, 18.1 million tons, breaking the previous record set all of 31 years ago.

South Korea kept top spot, just, with 18.84 million tons, keeping its title for the fifth successive year. China built less than half of each of its rivals at 7.69 million, but this is expected to double by 2010.
