Vinashin and Damen Create New Venture
New shipyard in Haiphong Vietnam furthers Vinashin's ambitions as export shipbuilder.


Two large shipbuilding groups have decided to establish a Joint Venture Company in Haiphong, Vietnam.

Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) operates 25 shipyards, constructing various types of vessels in Vietnam and the Damen Shipyards Group from the Netherlands which operates 32 shipyards around the world have signed a joint venture contract.

Together they will establish the Damen Vinashin Shipyard (DVS) in Haiphong. The area of the shipyard comprises of 42 hectares with 500 meters waterfront.

The DVS yard will construct a wide variety of vessels like tugs, workboats, high speed craft and offshore vessels mainly for the export market. The company is an extension of the existing co-operation between Vinashin's Song Cam Shipyard and Damen. The management of Song Cam Shipyard will take part in the management of the DVS yard.

The shipyard will employ 400 people and will create over 1,000 jobs with suppliers and subcontractors. The official signing ceremony (see photo) has been performed by Mr Pham Thanh Binh, Chairman and C.E.O. of Vinashin and Mr Erik van der Noordaa, C.O.O. of Damen Shipyards Group, in the presence of the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Mr. André Haspels. Peja Vietnam, the agent of Damen, assisted Damen in the establishment of the Joint Venture.
